While a Château Mouton Rothschild might be relatively unknown to most, others may know it as the £3,000 red wine favoured by the Beckhams, with it even making an appearance on this year’s Christmas dinner table.
That might sound out of most shoppers price ranges, but wine expert, Sam Caporn, has a brilliant solution as she claims shoppers can get a touch of Beckham glamour for a fraction of the price thanks to Aldi’s Pierre Jaurant Bordeaux (75cl, £5.29).
Sam, who is one of only 416 Masters of Wine in the world says: “Both of these wines are Clarets from the Bordeaux region made from blends of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon.
“Wines from this region have flavours of black and purple fruits with fine tannins and notes of spice from the French oak. Both pair beautifully with red meat like lamb or roast beef, or game.”
Claret wine is the name used to describe a red wine from the Bordeaux region – popular with many celebrities, including the Beckhams, it has a reputation for being an expensive, aspirational, fine wine – so shoppers will be pleased to know they can get their hands on a bottle at Aldi.
Aldi’s Pierre Jaurant Bordeaux is a blend of 85% Merlot and 15% Cabernet Sauvignon from the Bordeaux region.Sam adds: “Aldi’s wine is unbelievably good value. It’s an extraordinary wine with lots of cinnamon spice on the nose and a palate of plums and morello cherries.”
