The Addams Family Musical has arrived at The Bristol Hippodrome and the cast delivered an outstanding opening night performance last night when the show made its creepy and kooky Bristol debut. Samantha Womack, Cameron Blakely and Carrie Hope Fletcher star as Morticia, Gomez and Wednesday Addams in The Addams Family, a laugh-out-loud, hugely entertaining musical comedy.
The Addams Family Musical Review – Bristol Hippodrome Opening Night
With an absolutely stellar cast, The Addams Family arrived at The Bristol Hippodrome this week in all of their gloriously Gothic style. Samantha Womack takes on the iconic role of Morticia Addams a definite change of scenery for her after after nearly a decade as Ronnie Mitchell in BBC’s Eastenders. Cameron Blakely (Les Mis, Mamma Mia, Galavant) stars alongside her as her on stage husband Gomez Addams. The incredibly talented Carrie Hope Fletcher plays the wonderfully weird Wednesday Addams. Carrie Hope Fletcher’s recent theatre credits include Eponine in Les Misérables (London and Dubai), Truly Scrumptious in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang (UK & Ireland Tour), Beth in Jeff Wayne’s Arena Tour War of the Worlds. Les Dennis takes the role of Uncle Fester.
The Story: Wednesday Addams, the ultimate princess of darkness, has grown up and has a shocking secret that only Gomez knows; she’s fallen in love with a sweet, smart young man from a respectable family! Now, Gomez Addams must do something he’s never done before — keep a secret from his beloved wife, Morticia. Everything will change for the whole family on the fateful night they host a dinner for Wednesday’s “normal” boyfriend and his parents. All the usual clan are present – Uncle Fester, Lurch, Pugsley et al.
There are so many reasons to go and watch The Addams Family at the Bristol Hippodrome this week. The show has managed to perfectly capture the spirit of The Addams Family and give it original, fun and modern twist. The songs are beautiful, heartfelt and insanely catchy! With my teenage daughter in tow we were both giggling away and found ourselves completely engrossed in the whole experience.
Samantha Womack is the perfect Morticia Addams. Elegant, striking and a little bit twisted. Her singing and dancing are both absolutely jaw-dropping. Samantha’s on-stage chemistry with Cameron Blakely is everything you want and expect it to be – deliciously dark! Cameron has an intoxicating and infectious comedic humour that really brings the role of Gomez to life.
Carrie Hope Fletcher truly shines in her role as Wednesday Addams. I’ve been tuning in to her ‘Watch Me Wednesday’ episodes on her Youtube Channel ever since we knew we would be attending and this has been a real treat. Perfect for those who want to know what goes on back stage during a theatre show tour! The chemistry between Wednesday and her ‘normal’ fiance Lucas (Oliver Ormson) is electric. Oliver brings such a fun and energetic performance to the role, you’d be hard pressed not to love him!
It is worth noting in our Addams Family Musical review we are basing our experience on seeing the role of Uncle Fester (usually played by Les Dennis) played by Scott Paige in the performance we saw. Scott absolutely knocked it out of the park in his performance so if you also wind up seeing him in your showing you will not be disappointed. He brings so much charisma and humour to the role! Absolutely fantastic.
The Addams Family is the best night out at the theatre that we’ve had in ages. A laugh-out-loud show with a soundtrack to die for. If you’re not walking around humming ‘crazier than you’ for the next few weeks we’ll be very surprised. A total hit. Not to be missed!
