Alternative Valentine’s Day Tipples

It’s often easy to go for a classic Champagne or red wine as your drink of choice on Valentine’s Day, and whilst that’s a fabulous option and a very safe bet, we also thought it might be interesting to look at some different Valentine’s Day drinks that could earn you some serious brownie points for originality!

For the whiskey fan – an authentic reproduction of 1920s prohibition alcohol, sold in Harrods, Harvey Nichols and top-end bars in London. This unaged, white grain whiskey can be sipped neat over ice or mixed in cocktails and is perfect for creating some Gatsby themed cocktails for your loved one. Bootlegger is so named after the suppliers of the illicit alcohol during US prohibition. £37.50 for 70cl from Harrods.

Whitley Neill Gin

For the gin connoisseur – Hand crafted using African botanicals, this super-premium multi-award winning gin, is served with orange wedges to build on the unique flavour and aroma of South African ingredients, baobab and Cape gooseberry – as well as seven other botanicals. Whitley Neill Gin is derived from eight generations of brewing and distilling brought down through Johnny Neill’s family since 1762. Perfect for sipping in front of an open fire on a romantic evening. Established 164 years ago, there is much heritage to iconic British brand, Lamb’s Navy Rum. Alfred Lamb used to stash his rum in secret caverns under the Thames while it aged.. the bottle retains its hexagonal shape which was to prevent the bottles rolling around on the ships’ decks and July 31st 1970 saw uproar within the British Navy, when the Great Rum Debate at the House of Commons put an end to sailors’ daily rum tot.  Sold in all major supermarkets priced £17.00.

Tequila Rose is an alternative to traditional festive creme liquors, a luxurious blend of premium tequila and strawberry liquor, made using fresh dairy cream. Ideal in cocktails, popsicles and desserts, Tequila Rose is also enjoyable sipped over ice and served with fresh strawberries. Bloom Gin

BLOOM Gin is a lighter, floral gin with the aroma of English country gardens.  It was created using botanicals of chamomile and honeysuckle inspired by Master Distiller, Joanne Moore’s garden. The citrus notes come from the essential oils of the pomelo which help round off the flavour.  Best served with cut up strawberries or frozen winter berries in the glass and chilled tonic.  RRP: £28.00 per bottle from Sainsbury’s and Waitrose.

If you’re short on time but still want to create some romantic cocktails then I love the idea of using these ready to drink cocktails!
