As part of our UK travel series, we’ve been exploring some of the beautiful destinations and days out that are right on our doorstep. Slowing down and connecting with nature and the elements is so important for our health and wellbeing, and life lately has seen us take on everything from cuddling highland cows in Somerset to hiking around the Great British countryside. So it’s safe to say that if you need some inspiration, we’ve got you covered.
Our most recent day trip was to Westonbirt Arboretum, and it didn’t disappoint. Our day started early, as we wanted to arrive by 10 am due to the absolute scorcher of a heatwave that the UK is currently experiencing. This paid off when it came to getting an excellent parking spot and fast access. We decided to grab a coffee and a peach iced tea from the coffee cart by the entrance. We then headed left, which led us straight onto the treetop walkway, and this really is a sight to behold.
The treetop walk is a 300-metre-long walkway that takes you up into the canopy, on a serpentine journey through the treetops. It rises up to 13.5 metres above the forest floor and is fully accessible to wheelchairs, mobility scooters, and pushchairs with no steps required. This is perfect for children and adults, and I love that there were interactive signs and nature-based facts along the way to keep curious minds entertained.
We spent a lot of time reading the various signs and learning more about the nature that we were so beautifully enveloped by on our walk around the arboretum. Fun facts like these really appealed to me as I am trained in Reiki and nervous system regulation.
We had packed a few ‘picky bits’ and decided to take a break under a shady tree for a little picnic. There are so many lovely spots that are just off the beaten track. Bear in mind that there are fewer bins the further you head away from the main picnic areas, though, so bring a spare bag to carry any rubbish until you find your next available opportunity to dispose of it.
There is also a cafe if you’d prefer to grab some lunch, and there’s ice cream and drinks on hand if you fancy them. Don’t forget to stop into the gift shop as it’s packed to the rafters with glorious gifts and local treats.
With the summer holidays just kicking off, Westonbirt Arboretum would make a lovely place to visit with the family this summer. - ‘In Tune with Wellbeing’: Tuesday 11 – Thursday 13 August, 10.30am–3.30pm: Outdoor wellbeing walks with gentle yoga, designed for families to unwind together beneath the trees.
- ‘Wild About Bees’: Sunday 16 August, 10.30am–3.30pm: The chance to watch bees at work and discover the fascinating lives of free‑living honeybees.
- ‘Woodland Orchestra’: Tuesday 18 – Thursday 20 August, 10.30am–3.30pm: Children will create their own musical instruments using natural woodland materials.
- ‘Sensory Woodland Walks’: Tuesday 25 – Thursday 27 August, 10.30am–12.00pm and 1.30pm–3.00pm: Two Guided walks to join that venture off the beaten path, encouraging your young family to explore the arboretum through smell, touch, sound and sight.
Families can also embark on magical woodland adventures at Westonbirt with beloved characters from book and screen. If you venture into the deep dark wood you may bump into the Gruffalo, the Gruffalo’s Child who have a permanent home with us – and don’t miss exploring the Room on the Broom trail, new to Westonbirt this year. A family trail packed with Room on the Broom themed activities, fascinating forest facts and plenty of hands-on fun.

Is Westonbirt Arboretum Dog Friendly?
Yes! Westonbirt Arboretum is very dog-friendly, and you can bring your pup along to many of the areas. It is worth noting that dogs are not allowed in the Old Arboretum, and need to be kept on lead in the central Downs meadow area, but that they can go off lead in Silk Wood.
Can You Bring A Picnic To Westonbirt Arboretum?
