12 Awesome Things To Do In New York | Adventures in New York Part Three

Things to do in New York

Things to do in New York are easy to find. But if you are only in the city for a few days, what are some of the best things to check out? Having recently visited NYC for ourselves, we’ve put together a handy guide to seeing some of the best attractions and sights.

Things to do in New York

The New York Pass

#1 – Get yourself a New York Pass. This handy pass is pre-paid for before your trip and you can have it sent to your door. This is perfect for anyone who wants to see as much of the city as possible and to visit lots of the top attractions. If you use this pass wisely you will save money and have the security of knowing that things will be simple and quick to enter when you reach each attraction. We used this for two days to cram in some city sights. It was especially useful for Top of the Rock and The Empire State Building where things can get a bit stressful during busy times! Find out more here: http://www.newyorkpass.com and follow @TheNewYorkPass on Twitter to stay in the loop.

#2 – Ride the Subway! It is tempting to just hop in a cab when things are out of walking distance. However, trust us! The NYC subway is brilliant. It is fast, cheap and far less daunting than you might imagine. You can buy single tickets or do what we did and buy a week long pass that lets you ride on an unlimited basis for around $30 per person.

#3 – Visit Top of the Rock during the DAY and the Empire State Building at night. We say this for a few reasons, mostly because firstly (in our opinion) The Rockefeller Centre is the better of the two and you’ll enjoy the experience more. You also get a much better view and photos are great as you can get the Empire State building in your shots. The Empire State building has to be done, but we found it to be a little more drawn out. The views at night across the city were spectacular though and it has to be up there with one of the best things to do in New York!

#4 – Hail Your Own Cab. Okay, so if you have to get a cab, then hailing one for the first time is a surprisingly cool experience. It might seem like nothing but it’s kind of a right of passage….

#5 – Take a Picnic To Central Park – Central Park is HUGE. There is so much to see and do that you could easily make a day of it here alone. Grab a picnic and head on over for a relaxing day.

#6 – Grab some food on the go! Buy some New York food while you make your way around. Dollar pizza just has to be tried. My husband enjoyed his, as you can see! You won’t believe how good it is for the price! Street vendors do some good food and it won’t cost the earth.

#7Chill out in Bryant park. Bryant Park was actually one of our favourite things to do in new york and one of the best places to take time out and relax in NYC. This park in the middle of the city is beautiful. Green grass, surrounded by huge skyscrapers. Amazing! There are also public toilets, seating and lots of places to get hot and cold food here.

new york highline images

#8 – Walk the Highline. The Highline is a really amazing experience! Old railway tracks that have been converted into a park that you can walk around. There are plenty of seats along the way and you can also stop for drinks and ice-creams. Watch out for the creepy modern art sculpture that greets you around one of the corners though!

grand central station inside

#9 – Head to Grand central station and look UP. Grand Central is a place you must visit in NYC. Head in via the main entrance and look up! The ceilings are elaborately painted and it really is a sight to behold.

#10 – Take The Staten Island Ferry. It’s free, its an experience and it is a whole lot of fun! Not to mention the fact that you’ll get an incredible view of the Statue of Liberty in the process! Get your cameras ready for when you pass her and remember that you can always nip to the end of the ferry and take photos from the rear of the boat. You can grab an iconic Nathan’s Hotdog from inside the ferry terminal or a pretzel and an ice cold beer.

times square at night

#11 – Walk Through Times Square – Ok so it might be insanely busy at any time, day or night – but you have to experience Times Square. This place is buzzing and even the shops stay open until 1am. Crazy!

yankees game

#12 – See a Yankees Game – We’ve put together a full feature on our experience of seeing a Yankees game, just click through on the links at the bottom of this article. This is one of the best experiences we had and we were so glad that we got the chance to experience it! We hope you enjoyed our feature on the best things to do in New York.
