Award-winning professional gardener Adam Woolcott, and a vlog/blogger for British garden machinery brand Webb, provides invaluable tips for achieving a beautiful lawn.
So summer is here and it’s time to enjoy the fruits of your labour in your garden. At the heart of most British gardens is the lawn. British brand Webb knows what it takes to achieve a pristine lawn; it’s made an art of crafting lawnmowers and other garden machines for decades. Working with Webb, here’s my top tips to get the lawn you truly deserve:
- Be guided by the weather
Who knows what weather the summer brings, from heatwaves to sudden torrential downpours! If it is wet weather, avoid mowing until conditions improve.
- Cut little and often
Avoid going with too low a cut, especially early in the growing season and if it is hot, as it can cause your lawn to discolour or scorch in the hot sun.
For an ornamental lawn, the grass can be kept quite short, but for an area that’s likely to receive some rough and tumble, it’s best to leave it taller.
- Try the stripe effect
Larger lawns lend themselves to being striped, but this effect can still be achieved on smaller lawns, too. The secret? Use a mower with a rear roller, such as the Webb Supreme electric rear roller. By cutting up and down from the point you view your lawn, slightly overlapping the cut each time, you’ll achieve the best results.
- Ensure you have the right lawnmower
When buying a new lawnmower, there are three main considerations to bear in mind: the size of your lawn; what sort of finish you want; and how you want it to be powered. When it comes to the latter, there are three options:
- Battery, such as the Webb Eco 20V 33cm Cordless Rotary Lawnmower. These lawnmowers offer the might of petrol-powered equipment minus the disruptive noise, cumbersome maintenance and harmful emissions. All the tools are powered by an interchangeable 20v battery, so you’ll be free to work without the hassle of tangled cords or the need to stay within reach of a power source.
- Electric lawnmowers typically weigh much less than their bulkier petrol-powered counterparts. This lighter weight also makes them easier to manoeuvre. They’re especially suited to small gardens.
- Petrol mowers are powerful, robust, and fast, making them ideal for medium to large lawns.
- Achieve a cutting-edge lawn
After all your hard work, add the finishing touch and make sure your garden lawn edging looks defined and neat. Untidy lawn edging, where the grass is growing into the surrounding borders or paths can look unsightly. To simply maintain your lawn edges use a pair of lawn edging shears or a powered lawn edging tool such as the Webb Eco 20v 30cm Cordless Line Trimmer and Edger.
Whether you’re looking for an electric, petrol or even a battery-operated lawnmower, Webb has a comprehensive selection of machines to choose from. Intuitively and thoughtfully designed, every model is easy to use for both beginners and seasoned gardeners alike.
