As a national journalist, Reiki practitioner, and therapeutic coach, I have come to understand and embrace the power of calm and relaxation on our bodies and minds. After spending years climbing the corporate ladder and neglecting my own health in the process, I’ve spent a little over a year delving into holistic therapies and studying exactly how and why they can have such a dramatic effect on our wellbeing – more on that soon. However, one thing I found important was to cultivate a space in the home dedicated to relaxation.

Home Spa Room | The Ultimate Guide To Creating A Calm Wellness Space

You can create a wellness space in your home with just about any size room. In fact, nothing is stopping you from using a quiet area of your hallway if you haven’t got an entire room free. The key thing to remember is to ensure that the space is calm, serene, and airy. You also don’t need to remove everything from the room; a guest room with a bed already in it could work equally as well as starting with a blank canvas. Working with what you’ve got and elevating the aesthetic mindfully can offer a zen-like vibe.

Choosing the right paint colours for your wellness room

If you are thinking about painting your room, colour choice is an important first step. Typically, it’s a good choice to use natural tones for a calm and peaceful vibe, but many people find comfort in painting their favourite colours on the walls or even colour-drenching with dramatic palettes. Take your time and don’t rush this part, as the act of painting can often be therapeutic itself, and can actually help to calm and de-stress the nervous system when slow and intentional brush strokes are made.

But which colours should we pick for a spa room at home? J.Nichole Smith, founder of Joy First® brand studio and colour psychology expert, tells LifeStyleLinked:

“For genuine restorative calm, three things matter most: the colour itself, how soft or muted it is, and how the whole palette harmonises together. Get those right, and a room starts to feel like a getaway. The three colours I’d design around, depending on the kind of calm you want to feel, are soft sage green, a soft blue-green, or a soft pink.”

Sage (a soft, blue-based green): beautifully balanced, evoking peace and restorative relaxation. Green is also the easiest colour for the eye to process, so it feels effortless to be in. Geeky fact: one study found cool-toned greens like sage can reduce circulating cortisol by up to 18%.

Duck egg (a very soft greenish blue): tints and shades of blue-green like turquoise are consistently rated the most pleasurable (so it’s a real crowd-pleaser) and they gently switch on the body’s “rest and digest” response, exactly what you want in a space built for slowing down.

Soft light pink (gently yellow-based or blue-based): the psychology of pink is like a hug from your mum or your favourite aunt, nurturing and maternal. Keep it very light and soft so it doesn’t become over-stimulating or heavy. If you want a warmer spa vibe, start here, because pink is the calmest, lowest-arousal wavelength of the warm colour family.

Styling a home spa room

When it comes to styling the room, finding products that look luxurious but won’t completely break the bank is a great place to start. You can make a big impact with a few key pieces, and with this particular style, less is definitely more.

Products made from wood are an excellent choice for a wellness room, as they can help us to feel grounded, whilst helping the mind shift into a more relaxed and calm space. This pebble wood wall mirror from Dunelm works especially well in a small space and elevates the entire room.

Soft furnishings and cosy textiles

Blankets don’t come chunkier and comfier than this. Made from the softest Australian wool, it’s luxuriously thick. The generous size and top-level softness make it perfect for wrapping yourself in a layer of warmth on chilly nights. It’s also super stylish, seriously on trend, and would look amazing on display in your home. The perfect blanket to snuggle up under for a cosy treatment session. £125 from: https://loaf.com/

Setting the scene with candles and soft lighting

With so much cortisol running through our bodies, our nervous systems need to feel calm in order to fully switch off. Think about getting creative with lighting options. Candles, lamps, and soft, flickering lighting will all help to create a modern and stylish sanctuary that your body and mind will thank you for. If you are worried about having real candles in your room, there are some fantastic battery-powered candles available that give the same warm and gentle flicker, without the safety hazards.

The importance of scents in your wellness space

Scent is a powerful thing, and can have a profound effect on our ability to calm and self-regulate. You can use scented candles and diffusers to create a space that feels tranquil to step into, and don’t forget that the fragrance you wear on your own skin can also help to relax and ground you.

Lately, I’ve been wearing Gypsy Water from BYREDO, as it perfectly evokes the nature-based fragrances that I’m currently drawn to. My clients also love it when I wear this on my wrists and pulse points, as it enhances their Reiki treatments with delicate tones of bergamot, sandalwood, lemon, and incense. Allowing your own personal fragrance to drift through the room, scenting it naturally, can help to create an altogether magical experience.

Nature-inspired plants and greenery

If you are looking for a no-maintenance option for home decor, then you need to ensure that you spend time finding something that looks and feels realistic. This stylish olive tree from Dunelm adds an element of nature without the need for watering, and these spa-inspired cushions from B&M pull the whole look together seamlessly. However, if you want to bring the space to life even further, then think about adding some fresh greenery and herbs.

Bex Hamilton, founder of The Green Room, which designs restorative spaces that help people feel calmer, healthier, and more connected through nature and sensory design, tells LifeStyleLinked:

“We’re constantly bombarded with noise, bright lights, screens, and information. Creating a dedicated space that feels calm can help reduce sensory overload and support regulation.”

Bex encourages people to think about using all of our senses and highlights how really taking the time to take in the environment around you can be beneficial. When it comes to the type of herbs and greenery we should be on the lookout for when creating an at-home sanctuary, she explains:

“What can you see? Plants, natural textures, and softer colours. What can you hear? Gentle music or birdsong. What can you smell? Lavender, rosemary or fresh greenery. What can you touch? Soft blankets, natural materials, and comfortable seating.” The best spaces aren’t the most expensive. They’re the ones designed intentionally to help you feel safe, calm, and restored, says Bex, and we’re certainly inclined to agree.

So, all that’s left to do is find your perfect spot in the comfort of your own home and start creating your own little sanctuary of calm, whether that’s for personal use or to welcome your holistic clients.
