5 of the Cheapest Family Cars to Insure

investment tips

Buying a new car involves costs other than just the purchase price. There’s fuel to pay for, breakdown cover and of course insurance. Assessing the likely costs of all of these is important before you buy, to make sure it fits within your budget, which is why finding one that’s cheap to insure is ideal. Whether you’re buying a brand-new car or choosing a second-hand option through Unbeatablecar, these are five of the most affordable family cars to insure.

1. Skoda Citigo
Every car is put into one of 50 car insurance groups, set by the Group Rating Panel. Generally, the lower the insurance group number, the cheaper it will be to insure. There are various factors which determine the group, such as the Skoda Citigo being in insurance group one due to its low price and solid engineering. As a fairly spacious three-door hatchback it’s ideal for families in the city as it’s easy to park in tight spaces.

2. Hyundai i10
Unlike previous models, the new generation of Hyundai i10 cars are in insurance group one, making it cheaper to insure than its predecessors. The 1.0-litre engine plays a big factor in this, along with the optional automatic gearbox. With a price tag just over £10,000 new it shouldn’t stretch too many family budgets whether you buy new, used or on finance.

3. Volkswagen Polo
Now into its sixth generation, these could be some of the cheapest Volkswagen Polo cars ever to insure, as some models with smaller engines fall into insurance group one. A high quality interior with ample space make it great for families, with five-door options improving accessibility. Running costs are also kept low thanks to the frugal three-cylinder petrol engines.

4. Dacia Logan MCV
If you’re after something a little larger then the Dacia Logan Maximum Capacity Vehicle (MCV) could offer the solution. Also, in insurance group one and available for under £10,000 new, 573 litres of boot space mean you can easily pack everyone and their gear in for a family holiday. It’s cheap to run too, so you won’t be out of pocket paying for fuel.

5. Kia Rio
It might be in insurance group two, but the Kia Rio is still cheap to insure. A large boot and funky style help it stand out, while low emissions further improve affordability. New models include automatic emergency city braking for added safety, great for families with concerns about urban driving.

All five of these family cars are relatively cheap to insure while offering a good option in terms of space and safety.
