On Tuesday, we watched as Sony presented their June State of Play – positively packed with tons of announcements for Playstation players to look forward to sinking their teeth and time into. With so many trailers and names to remember, I’m going to round up what was announced for you, and give you my thoughts!
Wolverine
The show started with a ten minute gameplay section of Insomniac’s Wolverine, full of gore, blood and a few surprise appearances from Jean Grey, Mystique and Sabertooth! (Okay, maybe Sabertooth isn’t a surprise, he is an iconic Wolverine villain after all) This game seems fast paced, brutal and crude – Just like James Howlett himself. We saw a preview of some skills, like a spinning slash and plenty of different combos! Insomniac seem to be keeping true to their combat style from the Spider-Man games, and I can’t wait to sink my claws (Pun intended) into this title! Which, as we now know, will be releasing on the 15th September this year!
Marvel Tokon
One Marvel game after another! We got our first look at some new and prior known characters, including Doctor Doom, Magneto, Green Goblin and even Carnage! The combat continues to impress with dazzling effects, beautiful animations and character designs that really pop! With this reveal, there is supposedly just one more team to be shown before the game releases on the 6th of August!
Rayman Legends Retold
The handy hero is back with his friends Globox, Barbara, and the Teensies! In this reimagining of the 2013 classic, Rayman will journey across the Glade of Dreams to find a way to halt the spreading corruption taking over! With new gameplay, voice acting, and a slick new coat of paint, this game promises to bring fun and improve on the original. We can look forward to its release on 26th August 2026.
Bancho the Chef
A new addition to the Dave the Diver world, Bancho the Chef seems to follow sushi chef Bancho (Who you’ll remember from the first game!) on his journey to becoming the pro sushi chef we all know and love! No release date is out yet, but the game looks flashy, silly and full of fun, as is normal for the series.
Kemuri
A new game from Ikumi Nakamura’s new studio, Unseen, the ex-Evil Within artist is bringing us Kemuri, a game where you hunt yokai alone or with friends and pull off stylish maneuvers, abilities and even take powers from the very creatures you face. The release window for this game is somewhere in 2027, so keep your eyes peeled!
Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis
Lara is back in this new remake of the original game. As expected of the franchise by now, we’re going to be seeing plenty of exploration, platforming, puzzles and a deep rich narrative. Oh, and the dinosaur is back! The developers have promised that some segments of the gameplay may be modernised, so we’ll have to see what has changed gameplay-wise when this releases on February 12th 2027.
The Lost Wild
When this originally came on screen, I genuinely thought this was going to be revealed to be a Jurassic Park game – and I mean that as a massive compliment. The folks over at Great Ape are publishing this survival horror title set in abandoned research facilities, players will play as Saskia, a lady who wakes up on the island and tries to unravel its mystery while avoiding getting her head eaten by the many dinos within. While we don’t know an exact date, we can expect this title to drop in 2027.
Phantom Blade Zero
This action adventure title puts players in the position of Soul, a warrior who seems to be on a mission in a Wuxia inspired environment. Plenty of combat maneuvers were shown, including parrying, deflecting, dodging and even juggling a baby? But I doubt that will be in the main game. There is supposedly going to be a deep dive on the title in the summer of this year, so stay tuned to Playstation if you’re interested!
Onimusha: Way of the Sword
This new entry into the franchise debuted a new trailer, showing plenty of stylish combat and tons of substance, even showing a deep dive into what seems like is going ot be a very emotionally heavy story, so here’s hoping we see a great new narrative. The game is releasing on the 25th of September! And the demo is out now!
Silent Hill: Townfall
The creepy new trailer showcases plenty of horrific creatures with warped faces, new creepy atmospheres and, of course, plenty of fog. There’s plenty of puzzles shown in the trailer too, so we’re keeping a lot of that old Silent Hill feel! The story seems pretty enigmatic so far, but what is clear is that this is going to scare the daylights out of us. Silent Hill: Townfall is coming September 24th!
Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve
The new entry into the jet pilot franchise showcased its new trailer, full of story, action and dogfights. They’ve showcased Ace Combat Zero: The Balkan War as a pre-order bonus with the game too, so if you’re interested, get it before it releases on October 2nd.
Stuntman: Hollywood
Stuntman is back! After 20 years, the franchise has returned with a new theme of Hollywood, providing treacherous tumbles, daring jumps and even iconic vehicles from film history, such as the DeLorean! There’s no release date, so keep your eyes open!
ILL
I have had ILL on my wishlist for a while, as it looks terrifying, harrowing and thrilling, all things I look for in a horror title. To see it get a new story trailer in State of Play was amazing, and I loved the terrifying creatures, the body horror and the aesthetic of the game shown, including plenty of creepy creatures that stalk you through your journey. Look for this game’s release in 2027!
Control: Resonant
A new trailer for the next Remedy title was shown, and, as to be expected, there was tons of mystery, as well as warped landscapes, plenty of psychic powers and tons of strange creatures and weapons. The game releases on the 24th of September!
Until Dawn 2
The genre-defining game has finally shown a trailer for its sequel! After its remake last year set up potential for a follow-up, they have shown the new game follows a new group of survivors who go to an island to film their ghost show, which they have historically been faking. Of course, while filming, it appears they’re going to get a fair bit more than they bargained for, in the form of a machete-wielding killer. Dr Hill even shows up, although he’s looking a fair bit worse for wear… Look for the game’s release next year!
God of War: Laufey
Our final game shown was a new entry into the award-winning Sony franchise, but this time it appears we will not be playing as Kratos (At least, not mainly!). God of War: Laufey will follow Faye, Kratos’ late wife and Atreus’ late mother, as she awakens in the “Everywhen”, which appears to be the afterlife of the Gods – Not just the Norse pantheon, but all the gods, as Sekhmet, the Egyptian God of War, and Begtse, the Tibetan-Buddhist God of War, are shown! Plenty of the previous entries’ combat elements remain, with area of effect attacks and new weapons shown, as well as abilities related to Faye’s Jotun magic. Also, I guess Jack Quaid as a slime cube is shown. No release date is shown for this title, but we can expect to hear more soon, I’d wager!
